What is Data Privacy Day?
Data Privacy Day began back in 2008 when the United States wanted an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. The official campaign is led by The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and is now an international affair. The date was chosen to commemorate the 28 January 1981, the signing of Convention 108; the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.
The signature event in a greater privacy awareness and education effort, Data Privacy Day and the NCSA seek to educate consumers on how they can own their online presence and shows organisations how privacy is good for business. NCSA’s privacy awareness campaign is an integral component of STOP. THINK. CONNECT. ‒ a global online safety, security and privacy initiative.
If you’re wondering why we should celebrate data privacy and have an entire day dedicated to it, you wouldn’t be alone; it’s not a particularly interesting topic for most people! However, with an increasingly digital world, internet security issues and the GDPR deadline looming, data privacy is a matter which concerns everyone.

If you’re an employer, Stay Safe Online recommended hosting a ‘privacy awareness day’ for employees. They have put together a brilliant information sheet here, which demonstrates five ways you can engage with employees on the topic of data privacy – both at work and home.
The original focus of Data Privacy Day was on businesses, but as internet use has now become a daily activity for many of us, it is encouraged that everyone takes note on January 28th. Parents and schools, in particular, can use the day to talk to kids about safe internet usage; the NSPCC have published a handy parents guide for keeping children safe online.
GDPR and Data Privacy Day
If General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) hasn’t already been considered within your business, Data Privacy Day serves as the ideal vehicle to bring the topic up and set the wheels in motion for any changes that need to happen. Data security and privacy are at the core of GDPR; the new legislation will present businesses with the biggest adjustment to data protection laws since the Data Protection Act 1998.
As the May deadline for compliance fast approaches, many businesses will be set, having been busily preparing for at least the last two years, from small businesses to giants such as Facebook, all types of businesses will be affected. However, some smaller businesses, especially those without specialised IT support services, might be scratching their heads at the moment, wondering what all of the fuss is.
What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation will be enforced by law on the 25th May 2018. The law aims to give people, namely consumers, more control over their personal data; what information is held on them and how it is handled. It might seem crazy that this is only just becoming an issue now, but it’s basically because the way we use the internet and the data which is collected about us is significantly different from our early days of surfing the web!
So will this impact your business? Well yes, if you hold data on people, then you need to take note of GDPR. It’s also worth remembering that although GDPR comes from the EU, it will have a global impact. It also makes no difference that the UK has withdrawn from the EU, as the law will affect any business holding personal data on customers, prospects or employees based within the EU. If you ignore the law, you face large fines and risk damage to your reputation.
Fines aside, it’s worth remembering that data security and privacy is more than just a compliance issue. Consumers care about their privacy and businesses are expected to respect that. Being open and honest about what you are doing with peoples data makes good business sense, as honesty and integrity are highly valued in a company.
