Why we think password managers are a good thing…

How many passwords do you have for all your accounts?

How many of them are the same?

I know – there are so many to remember so you can’t remember a unique one for each account.

Nor should you!

Password managers can take the pain out of remembering them all.

The concept is simple:

  1. You create an account with a password manager app and you create one long, hard to crack “master” password which unlocks all the others.
  2. The password manager has a smartphone app and browser extensions for all your browsers.
  3. The app can generate a random password for you when you change an existing password or create a new account for a new service, and save them automatically.
  4. This means you don’t even know what the password is!
  5. All your passwords are stored in the app and can be auto-filled by the password manager.
  6. The app is encrypted. This means that if you lose or forget the “master” password, no-one can reset it.

There are differing opinions as to whether this is a good idea…

On balance, we feel that they are a good thing. Better to have a random password for the 87 websites you log in to, rather than 87 similar or identical passwords.

ITGUY has been using Dashlane since 2017 and we insist that all staff store all passwords in the app.

The app also has a secure notes section, where we can store other sensitive data.

It also has an emergency recovery function – allowing users to request access to another users’ account – only if a certain time length has elapsed or the user approves access. (Think accident or incapacitation).
