Dealing with internet downtime: a 21st-century annoyance!

Dealing with internet downtime, like quite a few other things, has become a true 21st-century annoyance! But what can you do about it?

 

Every day on the internet, there seems to be a system outage with a big company: Google, Microsoft, your bank (again). Of course, these issues can range from irritating to serious. Not being able to access your email to receive instructions on where you need to be for a meeting this afternoon is frustrating – although you can probably make a call to work that one out. But if your online bank is not working then that can be a whole different ball game. Can’t book the ticket for your journey to call on a client, can’t order the new computer (“system” says no!).

 

Internet downtime again… but what can I do?

 

When faced with this predicament, there are a few things that you can test to work out if this is a temporary thing or a more serious problem.

  • Retry the process: send the email, try to buy the ticket.

 

  • Restart your computer: (a more robust try again).

 

  • Is this just happening to you? If there are others in the office who can do exactly what you are trying to, but you can’t, this points to an issue with your own system… time to call ITGUY!

 

  • If not, it can be really helpful to find out if others are having a similar issue.

 

  • Companies like Virgin have a system status page that you can check on – and although it doesn’t fix the issue, actually knowing that a) there is a problem, and b) it is being worked on and c) you can stop wasting your time trying to fix it – is a bit of assurance.

 

  • Sites like Down Detector look at status pages of websites and amalgamate the status pages, so you can view them in one site… check here.

 

These sites help to keep you informed and allow you to reality check whether what is perceived as bad service really is bad service!

 

Overall, most of the big players have a reasonable record of uptime. Equally, they know, regular poor service can lead to a client exodus. For example, the TSB took quite a hammering after their recent online banking debacle: read more here.
